Does your child have a favorite book that enraptures them? Bring it to life with activities inspired by the theme of the book. Activities may include arts and crafts, music and movement, singing, writing, dressing up, theatre games, and learning about other cultures. Any of these activities can be also adapted for school and library programs.
Some of the books we have brought to life previously:
A Show of Hands: Say It In Sign Language
by Mary Beth Sullivan and Linda Bourke
We'll learn the sign language alphabet,
signs for our names, and sign language songs.
Dreamcatcher
by Audrey Osofsky
We'll read a story about a sister who explains the purpose of a dreamcatcher
and shows how she makes one for her baby sister. We, too will make a dreamcatcher.
The Goat in the Rug
by Geraldine the Goat
(as told to Charles L. Blood and Martin Link
We bring this book to life by making
popsicle heddle looms, weaving a bracelet, and learning about natural dyes
while listening to First Nation music.
Max the Music Maker
by Miriam B. Stecher and Alice S. Kandell
and Ty's One Man Band (Mildred Pitts Walter) We'll read
about children who discover how to make music from things that aren't normally
considered instruments. We will also try out some unconventional instruments
ourselves.
The Tyrannous Game by
Steven Kroll
We'll read about a group of children
who are bored in school, so they make up a story together each adding a
part. We'll do this too, along with some other fun theatre games.
The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs
by Phoebe Gilman
We'll read about Jillian Jiggs, who
makes pigs to sell but then can't part with them! Instead she teaches everyone
how to make them. We'll learn how to sew our own stuffed pigs.
Zoophabets
by Robert Tallon
We'll read a story about a creative
alphabet made up of imaginary creatures with imaginary names, from imaginary
countries, with imaginary homes - all starting with each letter in the alphabet.
We'll do the same using markers, crayons, and colored pencils.
Other Book Activities
Dancing Magic
We'll read a story and learn how to
create dances using props, taped music, and live drums and guitar.
Singing Stories
Using stories that are songs is a great way to learn to read! We'll sing
call and response songs, and act out songs/stories with the accompaniment
of my guitar and drum.
Material costs are additional based
on number of children and materials used. Additional adult supervision may
be needed.
